Christian youths design approach to combat HIV/AIDS Friday, July 25, 2003 .

By Judica Tarimo Christian youths from various denominations have designed their own approach to carry out educational campaigns that aim at sensetizing and mitigating the negative impact of HIV/AIDS in churches. The youths who come from Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Tanzania Assemblies of God, African Inland Church, Victory Church International and other denominations, have vowed to tackle HIV/AIDS and reduce new infection rates among christian adolescents and followers in general through sports and games such as football, netball, basketball and drama. They formed their national body, Christian Sports Contact (CSC) with head office in Dar es Salaam that unites the youths from these denominations. Speaking to The Guardian recently, Christian AIDS activists said such approach was proper and suitable channel through which correct and accurate information and knowledge on HIV/AIDS could be disseminated to christian youths and believers. “As christians, we believe in spiritual approach in fighting HIV/AIDS...we believe these are best and useful methods for us to educate our christians than those applied by ordinary or non-christian AIDS’ campaigners,” said Lucas Singili, Chairman of CSC during a one-day workshop on HIV/AIDS for christian youth held in Dar es Salaam. The workshop was organized jointly by CSC in cooperation with a Non-Governmental Organization, Right to Play (RP), with the objective of educating the Christian youth about the disease through sporting activities. Singili said the main workshop was to encourage open discussions and communication on HIV/AIDS among Christian youths, impart knowledge and education on health and sexual issues to youths, dispel myths and develop skills to prevent HIV/AIDS infection. Latest statistics indicate that while Tanzania has an average national infection rate close to 12 per cent, 30 per cent of the population living in Dar es Salaam has been infected already with HIV/AIDS. Close to two million Tanzanians have been infected with the disease, records indicate. “While Tanzanian youths aged 15-24 years-old constitute 20 per cent of the country’ population, they comprise 60 per cent of all new infections,” statistics unveiled to The Guardian last week showed. 6,000 young people worldwide are infected with HIV every day and one half of these new infections occurs in youths between 15 and 24 years.
